Where to surf in Russia

Russia is the largest single country on the planet with the world's 4th longest coastline spreading its surfable waves across three oceans and up to 13 seas. The surfing regions straddle two continents with 7500km separating the westernmost coastlines located in Europe from the Pacific coastline in East Asia.

Western Russia

There are three regions within western Russia: the Barents Sea; the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea – with a distance of over 3000km or 27º of latitude between the most northerly and southerly surf spots! Whether searching the near freezing waters of the Barents Sea or jumping into some Black Sea windswell in boardshorts with the growing local crew, the surf scene in Russia is full of surprises.

Eastern Russia

There are many opportunities to surf on the Pacific side of the country. Adventurous surfers have been exploring the wilderness of the Kamchatka Peninsula that draws in North Pacific swells heading toward the Aleutians and then onto North America. The ultra deep Kuril Trench sits just offshore, ushering in any pulse from the S, along with potential storm generated waves arriving out of the Bering Sea.

The west coast of the Sea of Japan seems an unlikely location to ride waves yet Vladivostok has a concentration of beach, reef and even pointbreaks. To the north the long thin island of Sakhalin borders the Sea of Okhotsk.
