Visas

All nationalities except South Africans and some other Southern African nationalities need a Visa. It is highly recommended to get one in advance as the visa policy is unclear and changeable. It is possible to get a visa on arrival but make sure you check that is a possibility before you arrrive or you may get turned away. Check

Getting There

It’s possible to fly directly to Maputo from outside of Africa (Lisbon, Asia) but it's cheaper to travel via Johannesburg or Durban in South Africa and cross overland or take a cheap connecting flight. Flights to Inhambane from Jo-burg and Nelspruit. Inhambane is a long 480km (300mi) drive from Maputo.

Getting Around

The main coastal road from Maputo to Inhambane is good. Roads in the far north of the country are bad. A family sized car in SA can be hired and taken across the border. Beach access is limited, even with a 4WD (up to double in price, with a very high deposit). Always carry all required papers. In Tofo, Inhambane you can walk from any of the beach lodges to Tofinho.

Accommodation

Ticket to Ride offer fully guided 4x4 adventures (fr $950/wk). Turtle Cove is owned by a surfer & has a yoga centre. Many surfers stay at Fatima’s Nest (Tofo) and Fatima’s Place (Maputo). Bamboozi Beach Lodge (fr $10) - the owner Des is an avid surfer. Seafood is the big thing all along the coast. General living costs are similar to South Africa. Expect $5-8 for a meal.

Activities
cultureoutdoorurbanwatersports

The diving around Tofo is superb - whale sharks, manta rays and dolphins are common year-round. The decaying old town of Inhambane is one of the highlights of Mozambique. Check out the markets and nightlife of Maputo.

Hazards & hassles

Malaria is a very serious risk. The Aids rate is terrifyingly high. Droughts and floods occur with depressing regularity. The shark factor is overrated.

Handy Hints

Bring all equipment and spares. Rent a car in SA or just walk around Tofinho. Dhows can only explore calm bays. Summer sun protection is a must.
