Where to surf in Mozambique
Mozambique is more off the map than on it, with the Inhambane Province representing around one sixth of the country’s 2,500km coastline most of which receives ample, seasonal swell and almost no crowds. Access can be near on impossible for some stretches of coast and 4x4 driving is painfully slow.
Heading north increases the swell shadow from Madagascar where the sandy barrier islands are more wind/kitesurfing territory and but the Sofala, Zambezia and Nampula provinces have a south-facing aspect that should be offshore in N winds at the many rivermouths and long sandy beaches.
In the far south, nestled up against the South African border, Ponta do Ouro is one of the few known spots which sets the tone for Mozambique’s plethora of righthand pointbreaks. Rock plus sand translates as fickle and the NE wind doesn’t help, so choose early morning, lower tides and hope for a wrapping S swell.
