Almadies Peninsula surf travel guide
Most surfers who visit Senegal surf on the Almadies Peninsula, the prime surf area just outside Dakar. This westernmost tip of Africa juts out into the ocean and the peninsula has one of the largest swell windows in the world and an epic concentration of waves. Swells can appear from the SE all the way around to the NNE, which is about 260°! Another great thing about this zone is the concentration of spots, making it possible to walk, cycle or take a short drive between breaks.

Getting There
Yoff airport (Léopold Sédar Senghor Airport (DKR) is 5min from N’gor and there are many charter flights from Paris. Driving from Morocco is a hardcore adventure requiring thorough planning and at least 10 days of desert driving, plus an army escort through the war zone north of Mauritania. Fly!
Getting Around
Most of the spots are within walking distance or a short taxi ride. For a trip to Dakar, take a Cars Rapides (15c) or a taxi ($4). Renting a car from private owners costs ±$30/d and much more from an official rental car company.
Accommodation
N’gor Island surf Camp (from $300 p/w) offers surf tour packages and is quiet compared to mainland camps like Malika ($300 p/w) and Oumar ($350 p/w). All offer boat and van access. Food is cheap…lots of rice and fish!
Activities
Dakar is a big city with markets, shops and nightlife. Take the boat ride to the former slave island of Goré. Local surfers hang out at Secret Spot, below the Diarama hotel.
Hazards & hassles
Sharks are rumoured to patrol the coastline, but fish are plentiful! Your main enemies are the sea urchins. Malaria and Yellow Fever are not major threats. Your biggest hassle will be street hustlers, eager to sell you things.
Handy Hints
Senegal is a very French destination. The Tribal Surf Shop at Le Virage has a good range of SAF boards and bodyboards. They also have a good board repair service. Locals use the south end of N’gor beach as a toilet.
