Where to surf in Senegal

Senegal, or more specifically the Almadies Peninsula , is well positioned in the North Atlantic to take advantage of one of the largest mainland swell windows on the planet. This hatchet-shaped protuberance marks the western edge of the African continent and can pick up swells from the Southern Ocean more than 7000kms away. There are great waves on both sides of the peninsula plus near-shore islands, ensuring somewhere is always offshore regardless of the wind direction.

Limitless beachbreak stretches up to St Louis and down towards Gambia with a few rivermouths and points thrown in (Somone, Baobabs). The massive Saloum Delta National Park is a wilderness of transient waterways and islands requiring a boat to explore. This region suffers from an extensive continental shelf so the beaches in Gambia tend to be bigger.

Cap Skirring in the Casamance region of Senegal is worth a look for a long right.
