Sicily surf travel guide
Way down south of mainland Italy Sicily is perfecly exposed to African weather fronts and offer (to the very few locals) some of the sweetest left points in the Mediterranean. They rely on the less frequent, harder to forecast S/E wind (Sirocco), which only hits this corner of the Med on about 50 days of the year. The north coast of Sicily does pick up NW swells and the biggest scene is around Palermo. Picking a time of year for SE swells is tricky but winter should be most likely to produce some swell.

Visas
Italy is a Schengen state and citizens of most European countries, USA, Australia, Canada and New Zealand do not require visas. All others, including those planning to stay more than three months, must obtain a visa from the Italian consulate in their home country.
Getting There
Lots of cheap flights from across Europe to Paleromo (PMO) but choices become more limited from October to March. There are ferry options from a number of Mainland Italian ports.
Getting Around
Renting a car is quite expensive in Italy and should be booked in advance. Drivers must be over 21, and non-EU citizens require an international license (in theory). Fuel and tolls are quite expensive. SS1 (Statale Aurelia) and SS148 (Pontina) are the main roads. Heavy traffic during beach season. Ferry to Sardinia sails from Civitavecchia.
