Sardinia surf travel guide
Sardinia is able to pick up swells from a full 360º swell window and host the largest, most challenging and consistent waves in the Med. Sardinia is blessed with some great reefs and points on the west coast where the dominant NW Mistral winds blow hard but don’t necessarily destroy the southwest-facing spots. The peninsula at Putzu Idu is the focus with the ‘Capos’ but Alghero in the north and Chia in the south are also hotspots. Winter is guaranteed some regular action while autumn and spring can also be good.

Visas
Italy is a Schengen state and citizens of most European countries, USA, Australia, Canada and New Zealand do not require visas. All others, including those planning to stay more than three months, must obtain a visa from the Italian consulate in their home country.
Getting There
Ferry to Sardinia sails from Civitavecchia. Cheap flights from across europe from March to October and from Italy all year.
Accommodation
Stay in Oristano for the best hotel choices or Putzu Idu for apartments and villas. The Is Benas B&B Surf Camp and Resort, Capo Mannu (fr $295/3d). A good, basic meal is $20.
Activities
Italy has 50% of the World Heritage monuments. The west coast is beautifully untouched. In winter the only lively bars are in historic Oristano.
Hazards & hassles
Weekends and holidays can get busy, but Italians are generally laid-back and good fun to be around. Beware of sharp rocks, urchins and plagues of jellyfish.
Handy Hints
Revolt Surf Shop carries a good range of equipment in the Capo Mannu area or try Wipeout in Cagliari. Kitesurfing is big all around the island.
