Visas
Most nationalities can visit visa free for stays of up to 90 days.
Getting There
El Cuco is a 2.5h drive from Comalapa International Airport, or a 40min helicopter flight.
Getting Around
Excellent bus service (cheap and frequent), reliable taxis. Boating to some breaks is the way to go - talk to the fishermen at Las Flores.
Accommodation
Several levels of accommodation in El Cuco from basic to luxury. Waterways do packages at Miraflores (fr $200) and the newly-built hotel overlooking Punta Mango (fr $457). Try corn and rice flour pupusas, as well as the local pilsner beer. No nightlife.
Activities
Conchagua volcano is the highest point around La Union Bay where there's good fishing. Visit the Laguna de Olomega. Parrots nest in the rocks at Punta Mango. Heaps of butterflies, often in the line-up. 7 active volcanoes including nearby Chaparrastique that erupted in 2015.
Hazards & hassles
Theft is a major issue - make use of hotel safes. Hepatitis A/B, tetanus, diphtheria, cholera, typhoid and dengue fever constitute significant threats. Avoid public transportation and hanging out alone, making yourself a target for armed robbers. No real shark threat, but earthquakes are a possibility. Despite the war ending it’s still an unstable country where violent crime persists. Favour surf camps and guided tour options instead of renting a car and travelling by yourself (expensive and risky).
Handy Hints
Limited surf supplies, take ding repair & extra fins. Reef booties at low tide and strong sun protection required. Water quality much better during dry season. Avoid Semana Santa (week before Easter). Best to bring US$ and speak Spanish. Women should not venture out alone, especially at night.
