Miyazaki, Kyushu surf travel guide

While not generally thought to be among Japan's top surfing destinations, Miyazaki's SE-facing shoreline is ideally located to catch typhoon swells. This coast is extensive and while the best waves do get crowded at times, there are lots of less accessible spots with good potential. Plenty of variety for surfers of all levels.

Visas

Most countries can visit Japan visa free for stays of up to 90 days.

Getting There

Most likely access is through Tokyo, then Fukuoka, then drive or fly Miyazaki direct. Miyazaki is $225 o/w to Tokyo. Fukuoka is well serviced from East Asian cities, Oz and NZ. Fly Skymark for cut-price deals. Using rail is fine, Shikansen trains are fast, buy a pass before arrival to get discounts.

Getting Around

The Nippon Honsen coastal drive is great. There is a good public bus system. Lots of people in Miyazaki City ride bicycles. Renting a 1300cc car costs $75 /day! Road signs are in Japanese, so driving can be an ugly experience. Use taxis if car hire too dear. For a small taxi, the capacity is 4 people and the taxi fare is $4.50 for the first 1.5km plus $2 per km thereafter.

Accommodation

Most flats in the city are Japanese style: straw tatami mats on the floor, sliding shoji doors and a deep Ofuro (bathtub). A cheap Youth Hostel costs $50. A hotel like Kanko costs $90 (double). Seagaia Sheraton is $150 night (dble). Expect $20 for a meal at izakayas, udon, ramen and sushi shops.

Activities
cultureoutdoorurbanwatersports

Don't miss the Miyazaki shrine, Heiwadai Peace Park 37m tower built with stones collected from all over the world. Plenty of nightlife in Miyazaki. Seagaia Ocean Dome wave pool shut down in 2007.

Hazards & hassles

Apart from getting lost due to communication problems, there is not much to fear. Crime is low to nil, locals will be very helpful with foreigners. Some spots are localised so show due respect. Typhoon swells can be intense and some shallow breaks can be dangerous.

Handy Hints

There are good supplies at the Blast surf shop in Huyga or PWS Surf Design but prices start from: longboard ($800), shortboard ($500), bodyboard ($230), springsuit ($200). Board rental is $25/ day. Most surf is in the 2-5ft range and shortboardable.

Due to global pandemic, Visas, Getting There, Getting Around or Accommodation information and pricing may have changed. Always check Government Travel Advice before travelling.
