Mid North Coast surf travel guide
The Mid North Coast shimmers in warm sunshine most of the year and maintains a laid-back country feel, shunning the rampant development of other coastal regions. It is also where the classic Aussie righthand pointbreak begins to appear on many of the southern headlands, offering rides similar to the lifestyle this beautiful region encourages. The boulder and sand mix promotes cruisey walls and mellow shoulders, plus bonus sections of speed and hollowness.

Visas
Everyone except Kiwis needs a visa before arriving in OZ so get one in good time before arriving. European countries, USA, Canada and Japan can get a free tourist visa online (some nations maybe charged a A$20 “service charge”). Visas last for 12 months but you can only stay for a total of either 3 or 6 months within the 12 month period. As always check carefully for any updates before you travel.
Getting There
Its 548km to Sydney airport, so choose Brisbane which is under 400km and a 4hr drive. Coffs Harbour Airport (CFS) has links to all east coast state capitals and can handle larger planes.
Getting Around
With half-a-dozen breaks in town, you could stay put, but there's a lot of spots that require a concerted driving approach.
Accommodation
Coffs has all types of accommodation from Novotel (fr AU$150/dbl/n) to cheap Aussietel Backpackers with free board hire (fr AU$35/n). Typical coastal towns that are quiet in winter, before bulging during school holidays with many caravan parks and campgrounds filling up. Holiday home rentals (Stayz fr AU$110/n). Many fancy and international restaurants in Coffs, but fresh seafood on the bbq is the real mid north coast vibe, along with bananas?
Activities
A string of National Parks, State Forests, Nature Reserves and Aboriginal Reserves stud this coastal region, containing an impressive range of biodiversity. Communing with nature is more the scene than nightclubbing in Coffs.
Hazards & hassles
Many remote areas require 4WD, especially after rain. The shark threat is ever-present on the Mid North Coast as great whites cruise between their nursery grounds around Hawks Nest to their seeming feeding grounds on the Far North Coast. Be very careful around rivermouths.
Handy Hints
Buy a season pass for the National Parks if you are going to camp for more than a week. Plenty of surf shops in all the big towns.
