Los Cabos surf travel guide
It's over 1200km in a straight line from the USA border to Cabo San Lucas at the southern tip of Baja California. Cabo is a distinctly civilised version of Baja and is one of Mexico's most developed ports, attracting US tourists to the burgeoning seaside resorts. Boardshort warm seas offer a 200º swell window from the SE around to the NNW, favouring S swells from either long distance lows or nearby hurricanes, but the W coast also receives a fair amount of NW swells.

Visas
No visa is required for most nationalities for stays of up to 180 days. If entering by a land border you maybe required to get a Forma Migratoria Multiple to present at checkpoints within the country. This can cost 390 pesos (about US$20). You can also download this online.
Getting There
Daily flights to San Jose International Airport from USA with Alaska, Aero California, AA, Delta and a range of budget airlines Aeroméxico and Mexicana are the largest Mexican airlines ($50 board fee). Mexican inter-city, low cost flights with Aviacsa, Avolar or Volaris. There is normally a hefty ±$50 board tax e/w.
Getting Around
All the big rental firms at the airport plus independents from $40/d. 4WD territory northeast of Shipwrecks.
Accommodation
Nov-Feb is the high season. The Los Cabos corridor is a set of hotels and resorts. Expect to pay at least $70/n for a good hotel. Cabo Surf Hotel overlooks the Costa Azul breaks ($285-625/n 4-8p). R.V parks and campsites are cheap (fr $10): San Pedrito, Pescadero, Cerritos, and Cabo Cielo. Free-camping possible outside the corridor. A good meal costs up to $20.
Activities
In Cabo San Lucas, The Squid Roe, Cabo Wabo and The Giggling Marlin go off at night. Whale watching or scuba diving in the Gulf is a flat day alternative.
Hazards & hassles
Hurricanes, floods, jellyfish stings, scorpions, sea urchins and intense heat are all threats. Localism has got pretty bad around Monuments and Zippers. If you get pulled over by the Federales or military don’t try to bribe them, just be cool.
Handy Hints
You can rent beginners boards on the beach at Costa Azul. Guns not needed and longboarders love Cabo. Los Cabos is the number one, long-weekend surf destination for Californians. The W coast is a laid-back place to hangout.
