Lakshadweep surf travel guide

Lakshadweep is a Union Territory of India, (formerly known as the Laccadive Islands), but these atolls share far more in common with the Maldives than they do with the Subcontinent. Across the 12 atolls, containing 36 islands, only 10 are inhabited, where the population of 60,000 is squeezed onto less terra firma than the 32km2 (12mi2) total area of the country. Kavaratti is the capital, where a new desalination plant uses cold water from the depths to provide drinking water and power. A growing number of tourists arrive by ship from Kochi, India and the destination island rotates. Surfers have been out there, and scored, keeping it quiet until Castles in the Sky showcased the super tubes that break either side of the big concrete pier at Minicoy. Minicoy sits in isolation a long way south, putting it closer to the swell source and a more likely candidate for regular waves. The best place to look for surf is on the bigger islands like Androth, Amini, and Agatti, where the airport and main accommodation is. The reefs are often straight without any gaps so the tips of the islands will need investigation.
