Gower Peninsula surf travel guide

Gower surfing takes place around a small peninsula projecting into the Bristol Channel which has over 20 bays and sheltered coves along its rugged coastline. Gower was the first area in the UK to be officially recognised an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. From long, expansive strands to tiny inlets, this stretch of coast provides a wide variety of breaks, combining multiple wind options with decent swell exposure.

The heartland of Welsh surfing has always been the Gower. The majority of Welsh surf history and personalities are all interwoven with this wave-packed area. From Broughton Bay to Langland lies an array of beaches, points and reefs of real quality. Llangennith is a consistent and busy open beach at the west end of the scenic peninsula and from Worms Head eastwards a string of reefs, points and secluded bays run back to the crowded, city surfing at Langland.

With the exception of W facing ‘Gennith and the Gower reefs, the spots are sheltered to some degree and, as with a lot of Wales’ quality waves, need large autumnal/winter swells to fire. Winds from the N quadrant are offshore for the S Gower, E for the W facing areas. If the surf isn’t cooperating (read summer) the Mumbles is renowned amongst Welsh surfers as the place to party.

Visas

Since Brexit, unrestricted travel between the UK and the EU is over. The current system allows for visa free travel for up to 90/180 days a year. Beyond 90 days things get very complicated so check online for the details. US, Canada, OZ, NZ and some others follow the same 90-180 day rules. Most other countries need a visa before arrival. Getting There

Arrivals at Cardiff International Airport (12 miles from central Cardiff) can get a train to Swansea taking 1h30 or hire a car and drive for an hour along the busy M4 corridor.

Getting Around

It's a 30 minute drive from Swansea to Llangennith through the Gower AONB. Bus 116 makes the journey in 1h15. Breaks along the south coast are accessed via narrow lanes with limited parking at some spots or by bus 118 which ends at Port Eynon.

Accommodation

B&B’s are the local flavour and there are many to choose from. Right behind the dunes of Llangennith, Hillend campsite is fine before it gets too cold. For maximum comfort try the Oxwich Bay Hotel ($120/n), the Worm’s Head Hotel in Rhossili ($100/n) or the Carlton Hotel in Mumbles ($120/n). Try Welsh rarebit or laverbread, a seaweed dish.

Activities
cultureoutdoorurbanwatersports

There are medieval castles and churches, or megalithic burial tombs set among the beautiful natural landscape. Mumbles is widely reputed for partying, centred on the Mumbles Mile, an endless procession of pubs.

Hazards & hassles

Water quality is improving despite neighbouring heavy industries. Breaks such as Llangennith suffer from strong rip-tide currents and flotillas of every type of surfcraft in summer.

Handy Hints

Good longboarding waves, check Guts Surfboards. Several surf shops including Hotdog and legendary PJ’s in Llangennith, who does hire and repairs. Many surf schools to choose from.
