Far South Coast surf travel guide
The Far South Coast of NSW is a beguiling zone, full of beautiful, bucolic vistas and raw Aussie bush, overlooking some truly top-class waves. Merimbula and Pambula are the classic brother/sister, goofy/regular rivermouth show, supported by a band of beachbreaks and the odd pointbreak act. This is a core zone outside of the summer holidays and suits those looking for a bit of colder water solitude.

Visas
Everyone except Kiwis needs a visa before arriving in OZ so get one in good time before arriving. European countries, USA, Canada and Japan can get a free tourist visa online (some nations maybe charged a A$20 “service charge”). Visas last for 12 months but you can only stay for a total of either 3 or 6 months within the 12 month period. As always check carefully for any updates before you travel.
Getting There
As the name suggests, it's a long way from Sydney. Driving is the only real option.
Getting Around
No car = no waves.
Accommodation
Check listings for places to stay in Broulee, Narooma, Bermagui and Merimbula. Lots of campsites from AU$30.
Activities
With so many rivers, lakes and estuaries, it's little wonder that the fishing is kinda good. Bushwalkers have endless options throughout the region. Cobargo is home to the annual folk music festival down in the Bega Valley, where the multitude of unspoiled beaches often only receive a couple of visitors for an entire day.
Hazards & hassles
Cold winter sessions and strong currents at the rivermouths, not to mention the noah factor. Solitude isn't always great if surfing alone on one of the long beaches. Washed-out tracks and getting stuck is another potential pitfall.
Handy Hints
A 4X4 will gain you access to some other breaks off the map.
