Epirus surf travel guide

The Greeks have long had an affinity with the sea, which is now extending to surfing. With slightly more than 1000 islands, there is lots of choice from Crete, to the Aegean Sea islands like Chis, Kos, Naxos, Rhodos or Thinos or the Peloponnese peninsula, which is exposed on both sides. However, it’s the coast of Epirus, right below Albania, that gets both S swells from the Ionian Sea as well as NW swells from the southern Adriatic Sea, which combined with the highest density of quality surf spots, make this region Greek surf central.

Getting There

Athens (ATH) is easily reached worldwide. Daily flights from/to Aktion Airport in Preveza (PVK) or direct charters from a few European cities. It’s 5h drive from Athens. Many companies link Italy and Greece year round. Best is Bari or Brindisi to Corfù, Igoumenitsa (8h from Brindisi) and Patrasso. Parga is 47 km from Igoumenitsa.

Getting Around

It’s only 62km (39mi) from Parga to Preveza , a mere 45min drive along the E55. Inland roads are slow. The Greek public transport system (KTEL) has daily buses which link Athens, Patra, Thessaloniki as well as nearby towns like Preveza, Arta, Ioannina and Igoumenitsa to Parga. Driving and parking in winter is easy.

Accommodation

During July/August, accommodation is tight but domatios can be found on the hill near Kastro, ranging from $50-65/n. Domatio owners usually meet the buses and offer their lodgings. In winter, it’s cheaper and super easy. There are also three camp sites nearby. Expect $15-20 for a delicious meal in a small restaurant.

Activities
cultureoutdoorurbanwatersports

In Preveza, savour genuine local delicacies at the dozens of small tavernas that line the narrow streets. Ioanina is built on the shores of lake Pamvotida and is the largest and prettiest city in Epirus, with old buildings, narrow streets and natural charms. Check Perama’s famous cave and the Mouzakei wax museum. Visit famous Greek temples. Drink some ouzo.

Hazards & hassles

The beaches in summer are packed with thousands of sun-worshipping tourists. In winter, weather can be a bit chilly and wet with strong storms. Waves and locals are mellow, unlike the driving in Athens. Greek alphabet makes it hard to read the road signs when driving.

Handy Hints

There are two Frozen Wave surf shops; one in Athens near the airport and one in Glifada. Bring a longboard or a wider, thicker board to compensate for lack of power. Sell boards to the locals when leaving.
