Visas
All nationalities need a visa which can be obtained on arrival and costs 30€ (US$36). The visa lasts 45 days. Check for any changes to the visa policy before arrival.
Getting There
International flights via Dar es-Salaam (Tanzania), Nairobi (Kenya), Dubaï (Emirates), Johannesburg (SA), Madgascar, Mauritius, Sanaa (Yemen). Also flights from Reunion and Mayotte to Moroni in Grande Comoros. Going to Anjouan can be a hassle. Domestic flights between Grande Comoros and Anjouan, but with small planes (no boardbags allowed). The ferry from Moroni (and Mayotte) is irregular with no schedule, no fixed rates, and the comfort and safety of the passengers is a low priority.
Getting Around
The main road circles Anjouan with plenty of easy coastal access, but it is better to rent a 4WD because many sections and bridges are damaged. Gas stations in Mutsamudu, Domoni and sometimes Moya. Both east and west coasts can be easily surfed in the same day. 4WD rental for $80-$100/d€(+ fuel) with a driver (ask for Moustali).
Accommodation
Moya Pension Bungalows is probably the best place to stay ($20/nt) just in front of the reefbreaks and close to the beachbreak. To stay in Domoni, check Loulou Motel ($40/nt) or Al Amal in Mutsamudu ($70/nt). Few restaurants in Mutsamudu and Domoni ($5-15), or find cheap food in the street shops.
Activities
Covered by tropical forests, hiking inland should uncover the endemic fauna (lemurs, giant fruit-bats) and flora. Hike Mount Trindrini from Domoni. Mosques and ancient monuments in Domoni show Arabic influences in the local architecture. Visit the old citadel of Mutsamudu at the top of the medina.
Hazards & hassles
The Mozambique channel is known for its shark factor. Lack of hospitals, many diseases and health problems. Drink only sealed bottled water. Domestic flights are on the European black list. Be careful at all times – don’t travel alone.
Handy Hints
With the lack of real hospital infrastructure, bring your own first aid kit, anti-malarials and pills to purify drinking water. No surf shop, so take usual boards, a semi-gun, a spare leash, wax, sunscreen and a ding repair kit.
