Where to surf in Tunisia

When in need of a cheap escape from Europe, surfers traditionally go to Morocco or the Canaries, ignoring the Mediterranean Sea entirely. Tunisia, with cheap flights and 120 days of Mistral wind a year, offers a viable alternative destination with fairly consistent surf. Although Tunisia has been barely surfed for years, the wide swell exposure of the north coast and the potential for numerous lefts to break under the prevailing winter wind is attracting more French and Italian surfers.

Visas

Most nationalities can visit Tunisia visa free for stays of up to 90 days.

Getting There

Tunisia is popular with European tourists, especially the French. Fly to Tunis (TUN) as the more popular airports of Djerba or Sfax are too far from the surf. Some charter flights land in Tabarka (TBJ) during the peak season. Bizerte and Hammamet are 1h from Tunis, whilst Tabarka is 4-5h drive away. No visa is needed for most visitors.

Getting Around

Although Tabarka may have a concentration of quality spots, Bizerte serves as a better base due to services and proximity to the east coast. The old road from Bizerte to Tabarka is faster (3h) than the new road. Renting a car with Anouar (www.tunisiarentacar.com) costs $215/wk. Fuel is relatively cheap.

Accommodation

In winter there is little choice of places to stay, few hotels are open and most guesthouses close. A 3-star hotel in Tabarka or Bizerte by the Corniche would be $30/dble. Food is good and cheap ($5/meal) but good restaurants on the road are rare and it’s not easy to buy beer.

Activities
cultureoutdoorurbanwatersports

In Tabarka, there’s golf or scuba diving for red coral, but in the off-season, options shrink to visiting the Genoese fortress. Bizerte is much bigger, including the double Kasbah near the old harbour.

Hazards & hassles

Terror related attacks on tourists in 2015 have decimated the tourism industry. The surf is fairly safe unless you hit a rock or wreck. Little purple jellies called Pelagica Noctiluca are quite numerous in winter. Bring light gloves and booties to avoid stings. Apart from a handful of locals, there is never a crowd.

Handy Hints

Take a longboard for the smaller days and good walking boots for muddy fields. Internet facilities are rare and slow. Learn some French to get by at hotels and restaurants.
