Where to surf in St Lucia

The French and the British battled over mountainous St Lucia 14 times, yet the island nation has remained low key as a surf destination. There are plenty of east-facing long sandy beaches that are joined by steep, plunging coastline that rarely provides the right bathymetry, but if the E wind stops blowing there are pocket beaches and rivermouths that may have good banks, like Can en Bas or Comerette in the north and Fond d'Or near Dennery. Down south, the kite-friendly sands around Vieux Fort are protected by offshore reefs and the Maria Islands, but it may be worth a look at the reefs to the west of the airport runway. The west coast is usually flat until hurricane swell provides some rights in unlikely bays like Marigot, or a straight N wakes up Windjammer and the far more consistent lefts of Rodney Bay, that handle SE winds.
