Where to surf in South Australia
South Australia is oft overlooked as a surfing destination thanks to its reputation for big swells, big winds, big distances between spots and big sharks.
Out of the desert pokes Point Sinclair and the concentrated quality of Cactus, SA’s most famous and probably sharkiest surf.
The most extensive line of sea cliffs on the planet fringe the Great Australian Bight but there's ample exploration to do around the Eyre Peninsula. Offshore islands filter the swell until Streaky Bay where the excellent left at Granites resides. Check Scale Bay, Venus Beach and the heart-stopping lefts at Blackfellows in Elliston. Other Eyre Peninsula hotspots include Sheringa, Point Drummond, Greenly Beach, Coffin, Fishery and Sleaford Bays.
The Adelaide region suffers from a lack of swell penetrating the narrow window, forcing surfers to head to the Yorke Peninsula, Kangaroo Island or the exposed Victor Harbour area on the south coast.
Beyond Adelaide lies 150km sands of the Coorong have few takers until Robe offers some civilisation and beach/reef options for all abilities. Head to Beachport east of the pier when the swell gets massive or try the fickle protected lefts at Southend. Engage 4WD to get to Cullens lefts in the Canunda National Park, showcasing the beauty of the Limestone Coast.
Port MacDonnell is a popular crayfishing and surfing town with entry level beachbreaks at A-frames at Piccaninnie Beach and an assortment of heavy reefbreaks like Posties that handle the constant juice thrown at them by the Southern Ocean.
