Where to surf in Oman

The Sultanate of Oman surf region is 82% desert and the coastline extends from the Strait of Hormuz in the north, to Yemen in the south with the exposed coast of East Oman bearing the brunt of the monsoon swells.

The Gulf of Oman coast north of Muscat is marginal unless there is a cyclone off India. Spots have been surfed around Qurum Beach, Fujairah and Al Aqah, a right reef off Snoopy Island.

South Oman has way more surfable coastline beyond Masirah Island and the Sharqiyah, but coastal angle is crucial to deciding whether too much wind or not enough swell will result. There is some regular surf in the Gulf of Aden around Salalah. Either side of the Southwest monsoon should be best at the long city beaches in front of the tourist hotels.

Heading south, check Mugsayl and Rakhyut or go north to Sadah for reef and beachbreak options. The Khuriya Muriya Islands have been surfed, but are very rugged and steep, while the adjacent coastline is similar in parts, interspersed with long straight beaches around Ash Shuwamiyah. The rocky beaches on the promontory at Ras Madrakah are worth investigating.
