Where to surf in Mauritania
Unlike its northern neighbour Western Sahara, the empty, granular coastline of Mauritania lacks good set-ups and crumbly cliffs backing open, shapeless beaches dominate. Check the abandoned ghost town of Lagouira near Nouadhibou for several long, fast right points or the old wharf south of Nouakchott, where the expat and local surf community seek wind protection from the incessant strong Northerlies in deep winter. Can be powerful and hollow, with frighteningly fast longshore drift away from the dishevelled pier.
