Where to surf in Malta and Gozo

The most southerly capital of the European Community sits in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, where it has withstood a pounding from millennia of Mistral or Grecale wind-driven waves. Malta & Gozo have an incredible history, with megalithic evidence as old as 5000 BC and a constant trail of invasions up until independence in 1964. Surfers are yet to invade in numbers, since it’s a winter-only destination, which leaves a handful of quality reefbreaks and fun beachbreaks to the small friendly crew of dedicated local surfers.

Visas

Malta is a Schengen state and citizens of most European countries, USA, Australia, Canada and New Zealand do not require visas. All others, including those planning to stay more than three months, must obtain a visa before entry.

Getting There

No visa for EEC residents. Malta (MLA) attracts many tourists through cheap package deals with flights included, often from UK and Northern Europe. Air Malta does not charge for boards, usually $200-350 from Europe. Ferry crossing to Gozo is easy with departures every 45min and 25min cruising time ($25 with car/2pax, cheaper after noon).

Getting Around

Driving on the left does not make it easy for continental drivers. Local drivers are pretty aggressive in the narrow streets of the villages and traffic can be heavy. take the bus if going to La Valette! The longest distance is 38km from Cirkewwa in the north (ferry to Gozo) to southern Bubuggia.

Accommodation

Package deal hotels are usually huge with lots of tourists. AirBnB, cheap guest-houses or small hotels from $30/n. In winter, stay in Mellieha, St-Paul’s Bay or St-Julian’s. Italian restaurants are good; $25 for a meal.

Activities
cultureoutdoorurbanwatersports

Scuba diving is big with countless diving centres around. There’s an abundance of architecture (Mdina, Valletta) and ancient sites (Mnajdra Neolithic Temples) as well as lively pubs and discos in Paceville and Sliema.

Hazards & hassles

The local scene is growing, creating super-friendly crowds at Ghajn Tuffieha, where sharing waves is normal. Beware with Pelagica Noctiluca jellyfish with SW winds and some reefs can be nasty. Traffic and driving can be mad with the planet’s 2nd highest density of cars driving on the left.

Handy Hints

A fish and a longboard will do. Good kitesurfing. Surfing Malta run a mobile Mellieha surf hire service with boards, SUP’s, windsurfers, wetsuits etc. Freeway sells/rents a few boards.
