Where to surf in Liberia

The name Liberia comes from the word liberty and refers to the nation’s origin as a colony of freed African American slaves returning to Africa from the United States in the early 19th century. Since 1989, two civil wars have plunged the country into chaos, led by violent military dictatorships, leading to the deaths of up to 200,000 people.

Now peaceful, Northwest Liberia has the greatest concentration of quality lefthanders in just about all of Africa and combined with warm water, virgin line-ups and friendly locals, these empty barrels deserve more surfer’s attention.

Surf Culture

History

In the early 80’s, Dutch Van den Ende brothers were hooked surfers at Mamba Point. This is how Martin described it : “Mamba Point is a left break formed by the curved outline of a rugged, rocky coast. The inside of the point has been reinforced with slabs of concrete and houses had been built all the way up to the edge of the water. The surf is best during the rainy season because of the wind and the direction of the swell. Most of the time we surfed in the rain, but it was never cold. We were not afraid of sharks but had to watch out for fishermen surfing in their canoes with trawling lines. Sometimes they would give us a lift back to the peak. If a wave could -turn you over two times-, it was about 9 feet. It did not get bigger, but when it was on, it was a fantastic hollow wave”.
