Where to surf in Israel

Israel may seem an odd place to surf, having never been known for consistent or quality waves. It's not the place you’d go for a hard-core surf trip, but for learners and cruisers on all sorts of craft, there is enough winter windswell and some choppy summer waves to support a large community of keen riders. The long beaches are broken up by T-head groynes and jetties, which can bring some shape and permanence to the sandbars.

Visas

Most countries in the world can visit Israel for up to 90 days visa free.

Getting There

It’s expensive to fly to Tel Aviv as many airlines avoid it for security reasons. East European companies are cheap, but the national airline El’Al is the cheapest when it comes to paying for surfboards. Israeli stamps in your passport can be a worry if you intend to visit some Arab countries afterwards.

Getting Around

Bus is the best way, since parking and heavy traffic are problems if you use your own transport. To reach Jerusalem by bus takes 45 min. Egged, the national bus company, is the 2nd largest in the world. Be sure to arrive at the beach early, if you want to find a parking spot.

Accommodation

Tel Aviv is costly so if you can’t afford the perfectly located Hilton ($400+/d), then reckon on $100 for a guest house close to Hayarkon’s Street (Gordon Inn). Eating falafel (chickpea sandwiches) will save you money on food.

Activities
cultureoutdoorurbanwatersports

Visit Jerusalem and the wonders of the old walled city. Plenty of flat days to float in the Dead Sea or drive five hours to Eilat and scuba dive in the Red Sea.

Hazards & hassles

Most waveriders are kids on bodyboards, who crowd out the spots after 2 pm. Wake up early, especially if you need to park. Swarms of jellyfish in summer. Rain brings pollution to most line-ups. Terrorist attacks are random, but tend to be concentrated on the Gaza strip, the West Bank, Jerusalem and along the Lebanese border.

Handy Hints

Since the Paskotwitz/Kancepolsky dynasty launched surfing in the 50’s, the surf industry has boomed. Board makers include Ultra-Wave (Herzliya), Inter Surf (Bat Yam) and Surf Club Israel, who do lessons and rentals.
