Where to surf in Iran
Tucked between Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan, the political and geographical landscape of Iran isn’t exactly perfect for a trouble-free surf trip. The southern province of Balochistan borders the Gulf of Oman, which connects with the Indian Ocean, providing real opportunities to discover new waves along a sparsely inhabited, desert seaboard among a string of small ports and even smaller fishing villages.

Visas
It is essential to check the latest news on visas as entry requirements can change for any country at any time. Visas are very expensive (can be US$200+). If your passport contains an israeli stamp you maybe refused entry. Dress smartly to avoid any problems.
Getting There
Getting a visa might be tough especially in the US. Iran's a big country and Chabahar (ZBR) is 2200km (1367mi) away from the capital of Tehran (THR) where international flights land. While a railway is planned, there are already regular flights ($150 r/t). On the way back surfboards will only get on the plane if it's not already loaded with fish containers.
Getting Around
The coastal road is usually fine and allows multiple surf checks. Local taxis can serve as guides and interpreters, but finding a reliable one may come at a price ($60-80 daily). Police roadblocks are common but not that much of a hassle. The road east of Chabahar is mainly coastal while the westward road sits inland. Petrol is dirt cheap.
Accommodation
Chabahar’s best hotel is the 4* Lipar located in the Free-Zone ($80 double). Sepideh, Daryayi and Keshtirani are much cheaper options in town. Remember that AC is a must. Kababs served with rice are the national dish. No beer, try doogh, a fizzy drink made from yoghurt, spices and aromatic herbs. Cheap food, usually $2-3 a meal.
Activities
The free zone provides shopping opportunities, but fishing villages don’t. Check out the curiously eroded “Mars Mountains” or the Gelfeshan mud volcano.
Hazards & hassles
Beachbreaks can hide some nasty rocks; remember you’re a long way from medical attention. Heat is the main danger, don’t go anywhere without water. Iran is an Islamic republic, don’t stray from the laws. Getting to Iran might be discouraged by family, embassy and insurance.
Handy Hints
English is seldom spoken. Persian (Farsi) is the official language, although locals mainly speak “Baluchi” which is derived from Hindi languages. Even though it’s 40°C, dress codes require long sleeves. T-shirts on land and boardshorts in the water seem tolerated… but only for men! Take plenty of wax and at least 2 boards.
