Where to surf in French Guiana
The capital Cayenne is regularly surfed along the suburban Rémire-Montjoly beaches and the coast-hugging Route des Plages overlooks some low quality NE-facing beachbreak. Inside the Mahury rivermouth is an occasional longer, brown-water left and just offshore another left pointbreak on Ilet la Mère. Mid to high tides are always better to bring the swell over the coastal shoals. Further large rivers drain into the Atlantic, but a lack of swell and sandbars make kiteboarding far more popular at Kourou. The best surf in the country can be found on Les Iles du Salut, with reefs off both Royal and Devil’s island.
