Where to surf in Ecuador
Ecuador has long been popular with surfers looking for a warm water fix away from the cold Humboldt Current that pervades along much of the South American Pacific coast. Ecuador receives plenty of small, long distance, Pacific swells that roll in with moderate power, breaking onto forgiving reefs and sandy beaches.
Travellers originally concentrated in Southern Ecuador around the Montañita area but a perfect left set-up in Mompiche soon attracted the more adventurous to the tropical rainforest and mangroves of the ‘green province’ of Esmeraldas in Northern Ecuador where estuaries cut the land into remote territories only accessible by boat.
Galapagos Islands
900km due west, the Galapagos Islands sit in splendid isolation, offering unique wildlife and waves on the two main surfing islands of San Cristóbal and Santa Cruz while keeping other islands off limits from tourism including surfing.
