Where to surf in Colombia
For the majority of travellers, Colombia brings to mind images of guerrillas, drug cartels, kidnapping and cocaine. The situation is improving and over the last decade and tourism has begun to increase to this beautiful, sensuous country of music and dance, unexplored jungles and sophisticated towns and cities. Colombia has two very different coastlines to explore.
Caribbean
From November to March, the more developed and easier-going Caribbean Costa Norte is the focus.
The remote arid coast of Caribbean Colombia's Guajira Peninsula is smattered with shipwrecks which is usually a good sign for swell, but more an indicator of the strong winds that buffet this coast where the Andes meet the sea.
Pacific
The jungle cloaked Pacific breaks centre around Nuqui working best from April to October.
The thick jungle to the north of Nuqui is notoriously lawless but will have some waves towards the Panamanian border. It would be better and safer to head south where muddy rivermouths slice through the steamy jungle all the way down to Ecuador, leaving plenty of exploration opportunities for those with a seaworthy lancha and strong anti-malarials.
